Thinking about the big questions today?

The social media giants of the early decades in the 21st century have died and been replaced by ‘CHAT’, a new artificial intelligence network built on a powerful quantum computer, affectionately called the ‘Engine’.

When the engine encounters a signal with no Earthly origins, the opportunity arises for humans to finally ask, why are we here?

There’s a Funnelweb on the Floor!

Parenting isn’t easy – especially when you’re half-way round the world!

From the author of the endearing bestseller ‘More to Life’ comes the emotional and humorous sequel of a family on a momentous journey of discovery.

It’s been a testing time for Rachael and her children. After months of challenging travel, they’ve arrived in Australia for a period of readjustment, eagerly awaiting a reunion with fourteen-year-old Sophie, the youngest daughter, who is finally joining them after months of separation. Can Rachael, born-again-single, self-doubting, and on the wrong side of forty, reunite her fractured family?

She now needs a positive attitude and renewed courage to once again guide her children on a headlong journey across oceans, deserts and mountains, towards a better understanding of what defines a family. Meanwhile, she is also on a personal mission: to discover her place in the universe.

Encountering poisonous spiders and dangerous snakes, along with various wacky weirdos, they make their way from Down Under to South America, where they go separate ways. Sophie and her mother continue exploring together. Will they be able to repair their broken relationship?

This empowering, heart-warming and hilarious story takes Rachael from obsessive self-doubt to new worlds and a new future.

CHAT

The social media giants of the early decades in the 21st century have died and been replaced by ‘CHAT’, a new artificial intelligence network built on a powerful quantum computer, affectionately called the ‘Engine’.

Avoiding the failings of its predecessors and free from the misuse of data, CHAT has become ubiquitous. A key feature, powered by the Engine, is the network’s ability to translate any language to the language of the user, in real time; meaning that everyone around the world can speak to each other as if they are all speaking the same language.
CHAT’s artificial intelligence was developed at a remote campus of Cambridge University in Warwick, England.

The academics at Warwick, led by Professor Nick Caine, continue to search for new languages, both human and non-human, to extend the capabilities of the Engine. CHAT’s public relations executive, Tiffany Hope, spreads the word on all the latest news from Warwick to the entire global network of CHAT users.Under the management of Professor Caine and his team at Warwick, the Engine polls the internet for signals to translate around the entire planet and even beyond, by connecting to a wide range of equipment ranging from wildlife monitors to space stations. But one such ‘signal’ that initially eludes the translation abilities of the Engine gets the attention of one of the university department’s sponsors, the US military intelligence agency. As the mysterious signal, code-named, Alpha285, gradually reveals more about its origins, Nick is subjected to increasing pressure from his sponsors to allow the agency to take control.

Set in a future where the legacy of past generations’ environmental abuse has come home to roost, and human ingenuity has created innovative solutions that attempt to arrest the damage, the pursuit of knowledge about Alpha285 becomes fraught with danger and intrigue.

With Love, Comes Hope

Doug Dunn, England

I live in Bovey Tracey, Devon, a member of a small Writing
for Pleasure group. Through lockdown we have kept going
meeting online and have been given this month”s
homework assignment. To write a very short story or poem
of exactly 100 words on Water. Our teacher Maria
Kinnersley called it a ‘drabble’.

Here is my poem, inspired by recently listening to SmallSat
Program Manager John Baker from the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in California speaking to 900 people at the
online Conference for Global Transformation.

Book – The God Particle Series

book 1-3A SIMPLE TALE OF SUBATOMIC PARTICLE METAPHYSICS

In the summer of 2008, a long-awaited scientific experiment was started at the CERN particle accelerator near Geneva. The experiment involved the high-speed collision of subatomic particles and the objective was to prove the existence of the Higgs boson, more commonly known as ‘The God Particle’.To the great disappointment of the worldwide scientific community and the relief of many people who were concerned that this experiment might trigger a reaction that would destroy our planet, a technical hitch caused the experiment to be abandoned at the crucial moment.

Book is the tale of a humorous journey that began in the chaos of that failed experiment. God Particles; both elusive and mysterious, contain properties we are only on the brink of understanding. So their ability to evolve into intelligent beings and dramatically affect our life on this planet should come as no surprise. That’s not quite how the humans in this story see it!

Includes Books 1 to 3.
